Its fossils have been found in the Djadokhta Formation, in the Gobi Desert, Mongolia. The name Citipati comes from a Tibetan deity, while the specific epithet "osmolskae" honors Polish paleontologist Halszka Osmlska for her contributions to the study of Asian dinosaurs.
