The Air Force Medal was awarded to non-commissioned members of the Royal Air Force and other qualifying Commonwealth air forces

Subsequent awards of the Air Force Cross are denoted by a bar attached to the ribbon

It is at a level below the Conspicuous Gallantry Cross and is at the equivalent level to the Military Cross (for exemplary gallantry on land) and the Distinguished Flying Cross (for exemplary gallantry in the air)
